I am a software developer and was getting impatient with my 2012 MacBook Pro when compiling large projects, so I set out to build myself a desktop. CPU performance was a must, and I wanted to be able to overclock, so I got the i7-4790k. I bought all of the parts around December 2015 when Haswell was getting phased out in New Zealand, but the Hackintosh Skylake builds were a long way from being production ready, so I picked up the last Z97 mobo that PB Tech had in stock.
I got the Phanteks Evolv because it looked nice, but it was a joy to work with. Check out some of the reviews on Youtube, it has heaps of really nice features which make it easy to handle.
Overclocking notes: with a liquid cooler, I got to 4.9 GHz, 1.32V.
Build Instructions
Build the computer as normal, but don't plug the graphics card in. Connect the HDMI cable for the monitor into the motherboard.
Make sure that the EFI is set to use internal graphics
Create a UniBeast installation as normal
Install Mac OS X from UniBeast (you won't have a network connection at this point)
Boot into OS X on the hard drive from the USB's EFI
Plug in an Ethernet cable, open Safari, the internet should be working.
Run Multibeast to setup clover boot loader.
MultiBeast config:
Asrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer Ethernet Controller Drivers
- Realtek ALC1150 sound driver
- FakeSMC, FakeSMC Plugins, FakeSMC HWMonitor (v6.18.1394)
- Clover v2.3k r3320 UEFI Boot Mode
- Customise System to be an iMac 14,2
Shutdown computer

Download Linux Mint ISO 17.2 Rafaela -MATE 64-bit and put it on a bootable USB (http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=192)
When you boot into Linux Mate from the USB EFI, make sure you boot from the EFI section which only shows you two options: safe mode or normal. If you just let it boot up without choosing, it will boot you into a blue screen where you can pick from many options when starting the computer. Don't choose this route as you won't be able to access the EFI like you need to.
To setup, open a terminal and type
To remove a bootnum
Install Atheros E2200 Ethernet kext
Set boot flags IGPEnabler=No, Turn off 'Inject Intel' graphics
Install Nvidia web drivers
Shut down
Start up and change bios to use PCI GPU
Restart and switch HDMI cable to Graphics Card
Move FakeSMC and AtherosE2200Ethernet.kext to EFI/CLOVER/kexts/10.11
Reboot
Delete Thunderbolt Kexts from SLE
- DPAdapters
- EDMService
Fatal1ty Z97 Killer Drivers
- IP- NHI
- PCIAdapters
- UTDM
The Firewire works out of the box. The Bluetooth seems to only work if I plug the USB power cable into a certain USB header on the motherboard. The Wifi isn't working yet, but I'll update this once I figure out why.
