Microsoft launched the latest preview build of Windows 10 last week to the Insider Program.

It is worth mentioning that Build 10565 was only released to the Fast Ring members of the community.

The Redmond Company generally as a rule, only offers the Windows 10 ISOs of Preview Builds, only when the Build is made available to the Slow Ring. In other words, the Build has to be stable enough, and not cause any major problems for Slow Ring users and new users. That makes sense, because a buggy operating system, would make a terrible first experience, for someone who hasn’t tried Windows 10 before.

The announcement was made by Microsoft’s Gabriel Aul, on Twitter:

Aul explained that the Build 10565 ISO was being released so that people can try the new activation paths that Microsoft enabled with the latest version of the operating system.

A few days ago, when Microsoft announced the release of the Build 10565, it also announced a major change in the operating system. This is in fact what Aul was talking about in his Tweet. Windows 10 now allows users to use their Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product key to activate Windows, provided that the license is eligible.

A product key activation method was not available prior to Build 10565, the only way to validate Windows 10 was to directly upgrade from the previous version of Windows.

The release of the ISO could also possibly attract new users to try Windows 10. If they like it, they could stick with it by activating the operating system, by using their old product key. And if you don’t like it, and we don’t blame you for this one, you can revert to your previous operating system within 30 days (not valid for clean installs). But more importantly, I think this move will actually encourage people who are moving from an older PC to a newer one (without an operating system). Such people could put their old license to good use, it makes economical sense.

I can’t help but think that is a major hint that Build 10565 could be the Windows 10 Threshold 2 Update. We were expecting Microsoft to roll out support for browser extensions in Microsoft Edge. But I suppose we will have to make do with what we’ve got. I did snag myself a copy of the ISO just in case, I need to upgrade other PCs in the near future.
